Fishing

Fishing Charters
Fishing in Tompkins County centers on the 42,496-acre Cayuga Lake and its dozens of tributaries. Cayuga Lake is approximately 40 miles long, 435' at its deepest point, and 384’ above sea level. It was judged by Sports Afield Magazine as one of the top ten bass lakes in the United States and has been featured on ESPN as well as TNN. Notables like Doug Hannon (The Bass Professor), Jimmy Houston, Lonnie Stanley and Shaw Grigsby have all enjoyed the bass fishing on Cayuga Lake. Besides an abundance of smallmouth and large mouth bass, lake trout, land-locked salmon, brown trout and beautiful rainbow trout are also plentiful. Many large northern pike inhabit Cayuga’s waters. Trout and salmon season is open year round in the lake. The fishermen who are willing to brave the winter elements take large fish! There are numerous boat launch areas available - or, for the non-boater, there are numerous locations to view the lake and streams.

Though not the deepest, Cayuga Lake is the longest of the eleven Finger Lakes. The combination of nearly a quarter of the lake in either shallows or deep water provides for a habitat for the greatest fishing diversity in the region.

With all the streams and gorges in the Finger Lakes, Fly Fishing can be spectacular any time of the season. Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Bullhead, Pan Fish and Rainbow Trout are some of the fish that populate the water ways.
